The State Opening of Parliament will go ahead tomorrow despite mounting calls for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign, according to senior figures inside Downing Street.

Amid deepening political pressure and growing unrest within Westminster, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister is understood to have told colleagues that to his knowledge, the State Opening will proceed as planned, in an attempt to quell speculation that the ceremony could be delayed or scaled back.

The annual constitutional event, attended by King Charles III, is one of the most symbolic moments in the political calendar, with the monarch delivering the government’s legislative agenda from the throne in the House of Lords.

However, concerns are reportedly growing behind palace walls that the King could be placed in an increasingly uncomfortable position if the Prime Minister’s authority continues to weaken ahead of the ceremony.

Senior figures close to the Palace are said to fear the monarch may face embarrassment by being required to publicly endorse a government programme while speculation swirls over Starmer’s future. Constitutional experts note that the King remains politically neutral, but the optics of the ceremony could become difficult should calls for resignation intensify in the hours before the event.

Despite the tension, preparations for the State Opening have continued at pace, with military rehearsals, security operations and ceremonial arrangements already completed across Westminster.

Downing Street has so far insisted the Prime Minister retains full confidence in his government and remains focused on delivering its legislative programme.

Opposition MPs and critics, however, argue that proceeding with the ceremony under such political circumstances risks overshadowing an event traditionally associated with stability, continuity and national unity.

The State Opening is expected to attract huge public and media attention tomorrow as Westminster watches closely for any last-minute political developments.
